Set up Accessibility Accommodations in New Quizzes

Accessibility accommodations provide support that allows students with disabilities to achieve the same instructional goals as students without disabilities. This article details the steps needed to provide students with additional time on quizzes according to their approved accommodations. Be sure to set a separate availability window on the quiz if the extra time granted exceeds the availability window set for other students.

To set up accessibility accommodations for each student in New Quizzes, those with instructor or TA roles within a course can:

  • Adjust availability windows
  • Accommodate extra time for all the quizzes in a course for a student in a one-time setting with New Quizzes (recommended for Student Life Disability Services accommodations)
  • Add exceptions for a student with additional time for a specific quiz
UX Tip

Unlike Classic Quiz, the Designer role cannot make any edits to New Quizzes.

  7. In the Available from field, enter the desired start time for this accommodation.

  10. Click Save button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

After you save the above accommodation changes, the student will be able to access the quiz in the defined Available from to Until time frame.

Caution

Please note the quiz availability window should be long enough to cover the full length of the exam time allocated to students. This is especially important when adding extra time for those with time accommodation. Consider making the availability window long enough to allow for technical difficulties or delays in arriving at the testing location.

Add extra time for all quizzes in a course

(Recommended for time accommodations)

When you receive a student’s time accommodation for quizzes or exams in a course, it is recommended that you use the following method, which will apply the time accommodation to all New Quizzes' quizzes for the student in that course.

  1. In the course navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Click the name of the quiz you’d like to modify.
  3. On the Quiz Details page, click Build

under the Accommodations column for that student.

  6. This will open a new window for Time adjustments. There are a few options for time adjustments: Give additional time, Remove time limit (unlimited) and Time limit multiplier.

It is recommended that you use the Time limit multiplier, which allows you to set time accommodation as provided by Student Life Disability Services, regardless of the actual time limit for the quizzes.

If a student is given a 1.5 time accommodation, you will set the Time limit multiplier to 1.5 time, which will give the students 1.5 time accommodations for all quizzes even if the quiz time limits are different for each quiz in the course.

For example, if the Time limit multiplier is set to 1.5 for a student, this will give the student 45 minutes on a 30 minute quiz (time plus one half) or 90 minutes on a 60 minute quiz.

It may be appropriate to use the other features to add additional time or remove the time limit depending on the student’s accommodation. However, remember that what you set on one quiz will apply to all quizzes. For example, if you use the Give additional time feature to add 15 extra minutes to a 30-minute quiz, the student will get 45 minutes total on that quiz (1.5 time). But on a quiz with a 60-minute time limit, they will only get 75 minutes total, which is not the full 1.5 time accommodation.

  7. Click the Save button after modifying your desired time adjustment. The saved accommodation will apply to all the quizzes made with New Quizzes in the course for this student.

Add extra time for a specific quiz

On occasion you may need to make time accommodation which does not apply for all quizzes in the course. In those cases, you should use the Moderate button to set the accommodation for the specific student for each quiz. Time added using the Moderate button only applies to that specific quiz.

  1. In the course navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Click the name of the quiz you’d like to modify.
  3. On the Quiz Details page, click Build

  8. Close the Moderate pop-up window by clicking on the x icon.
  9. Your updates will be saved automatically.

After you have made the above accommodation, the student will be given the defined extra attempts and/or extra time on each attempt for this specific quiz.

UX Tip

You can add extra attempts for all students for the entire class by going into the Settings tab in the quiz building tool. There, you can add as many attempts as desired, and you can also require time between attempts or options to allow students to build on their previous attempts.
