Carmen course shells are created for all academic courses listed in the Registrar’s system. If you choose to use Carmen, you will need to Create a Course to begin building course content in Carmen. Individuals listed as the instructor of the course in the Registrar's system will be able to use the Create a Course functionality.

Instructional staff are added when the course is created. Students already enrolled in the course through the Registrar will be added after a short amount of time. If student enrollments are not present 24 hours after the course is created, contact us at carmen@osu.edu.

Courses are only visible to students within the Canvas mobile apps once the course is created by the instructor. This is different from the full web-interface view, where students can see all their course enrollments, including unpublished courses. This can cause confusion about enrollment status and app functionality. We ask instructors to create their courses well before the semester begins. We encourage students to verify enrollment on the Carmen landing page at carmen.osu.edu to confirm enrollments. 

To create a course: 

1. Navigate to carmen.osu.edu.
2. Click Login and enter your Ohio State username (lastname.#) and password. 
   1. [Optional] Use the Filter settings to readily display the course you would like to create. This is useful if you want to create a batch of courses in one sitting. You may also type the name of the courses within the Search bar to display individual courses quickly.
      • Term - Select on the term in which you would like to create a course.
      • Status - Select only Not Created to display all courses that have not been created.
      • Role - Be sure the Instructor role is selected. This displays all courses for which you have access to create courses.

3. Click the gear icon to the right of the course you would like to create. The Create Course box displays.

4. Click Create Course. A pop-up displays.

5. Click Create once more. You will return to the landing page once your course has finished creating.

Your course is now in the Unpublished status. Meaning that students will see the course has been created in Carmen, but will not have access until you publish the course.
