Proctorio is an online proctoring solution that is fully integrated into CarmenCanvas. The tool allows the instructor to:
- Record exam audio, webcam recording, and screen recording for review afterward
- Leverage algorithms to identify potential academic misconduct and efficiently review the relevant recording segments
- Settings may be adjusted for identifying potential academic misconduct to allow for varying scenarios, such as an open book exam
- Check exam recordings to confirm the identification shown at the exam start matches the intended student
Proctorio is available in every course at Ohio State, however, it is at the discretion of the instructor if the tool is used. Beyond Proctorio, Ohio State offers a variety of suggested proctoring options. Proctorio is not compatible with iPad, may cause issues for those with limited internet bandwidth, and may not be available internationally. If you are concerned about your ability to use Proctorio, contact your instructor to discuss alternative options.
Proctorio offers you the flexibility to take your exams at the time and in the location of your choosing. To use Proctorio you must be over 18 years of age. Additionally, the tool has limitations in its accessibility for students reliant upon screen readers and keyboard navigation.
ODEE and the Digital Accessibility Center are working with Proctorio to make the tool fully accessible. Due to the current limitations, students reliant upon screen readers and keyboard navigation have the choice to use a different proctoring option or take the online exam without Proctorio enabled.
Due to the nature of Proctorio, and the recording of audio and video, students must sign a waiver as part of the exam process. Reviewing and accepting the waiver is the last of the Proctorio setup steps before an exam begins. The final setup step, titled Exam Agreement, includes the following language:
It is important to know that there is no one observing you while you take your exam. Proctorio is not making decisions about whether or not academic misconduct has occurred. It will be up to your instructor whether review your recorded session and discuss any concerns with you.
