Record and Submit Video Assignments in Carmen

Your instructor might ask you to record a video of yourself demonstrating a skill, using a piece of software correctly, presenting a paper you wrote, or responding to prompts on a discussion board — just to name a few examples — as an assignment for your course.

This guide will help you decide how to record your video, provide suggestions based on whether you need to edit your video, and submit the video for your assignment.

The type of submission will depend on how your instructor sets up the assignment, but you will submit your video in one of three ways:

Caution

Uploading a large video file from your computer or recording a long video within Carmen can result in long upload times depending on your internet connection. Learn more about using the Media Tool to record in Carmen.

Recording Your Video

Below are recording suggestions based on whether you need to edit to your video. Most of the time, you can use CarmenZoom to record. Sometimes you may want more editing control and you can use PowerPointiMovie, or Adobe Rush.

For additional information, see the Digital Flagship Handbook’s guide on Creating Videos on your iPad.

No editing needed

CarmenZoom is a great tool for recording, especially if you only need to trim the beginning or end of your video. You can record your camera, share your screen, or use a whiteboard for drawing or notes. You can even record in Zoom on your iOS or Android device. If you need to demonstrate a skill (on your computer or not), present material, or give a speech, recording in CarmenZoom is the way to go.

Recording in CarmenZoom requires a stable internet connection. If you will be recording at a time or place with little to no internet connection, follow the instructions below. Submit your video once you have a better connection.

Record Using CarmenZoom

  1. From CarmenZoom, share your screen, if necessary.
  2. Press Record to the Cloud.
  3. Complete your recording.
  4. Once your video is recorded, you can find the recording by logging in to  carmenzoom.osu.edu and clicking on the Recording menu.
  5. Copy the recording URL and then share the URL in Carmen to complete your assignment.

CarmenZoom cloud recordings are available for 120 days.

Minimal editing needed

If you only need to minimally edit to your recording by adding music, combining two videos, or removing part of a video, you can still use CarmenZoom to record your video. You can also use recording software you have on your device. PowerPoint is another good recording tool. You can record entire presentations, or one slide at a time – allowing for easy editing in the middle of a presentation if needed.

However you choose to record your video, you’ll need to be able to make an editable video file from your recording. Editable file types include .MP4, .MOV, .AVI, .WMV, .M4V, and .M4P, among others.
