Mediasite Hardware Recorder

Course sessions may be recorded in one of two ways: the Mediasite Hardware Recorder or Mediasite Mosaic.

  • The Hardware Recorder is integrated into the podiums of specific large classrooms.
  • Mediasite Mosaic can be downloaded onto your office or personal computer and used to record presentations at any time. It can also be installed on the classroom computer in most smaller classrooms. See Getting Started with Mediasite for details.

If you teach in a classroom equipped with the Hardware Recorder, you can schedule it to automatically record your class sessions. Lectures recorded using the Hardware Recorder will be saved in a catalog that will be created as part of fulfilling this request. Only Ohio State faculty and staff may complete a request to schedule Hardware Recordings.

To schedule the Hardware Recorder in your classroom, complete the Mediasite Contact Form. Requests must be received at least 1 week before you want to start using this option.

Caution

While it is possible to activate the Mediasite hardware without having scheduled it beforehand, this is not recommended. If this is done, the recording stays on the classroom computer rather than uploading to the MyMediasite portal.

Tips for Using the Hardware Recorder

After you have requested the hardware recorder option and received confirmation that your schedule is set up:

  • Prepare your presentation on the classroom computer.
  • Make sure the podium mic is turned on. In some rooms, the mic and webcam are built into the monitor and do not need to be turned on separately. Be sure to test this before your classtime begins.
    UX Tip

    You can borrow a wireless mic from the Classroom Loan Desk in Enarson Hall. This is the recommended option if you tend to move away from the podium while speaking.

  • Mediasite will automatically record everything that is shown on the classroom computer during your scheduled class time. This allows you to switch between different kinds of presentation options. As long as something appears on the classroom computer screen, it will be recorded. Once your class session ends, the recording is automatically loaded to your Mediasite portal.
  • The video for each day appears in the course's folder in your Mediasite portal with the scheduled date and time. You can manage or share your presentation from your portal just as if you had uploaded the video with a desktop recorder.
