Getting Started
The Carmen AI assistant is available to instructors to use in their CarmenCanvas courses. Instructors build an assistant to help meet instructional goals. This includes defining what course content the assistant can draw from and what role, behavior, personality, and constraints it will operate under.

Setting up Student Access to your AI Assistant
Once you’ve set up your Carmen AI Assistant, you can make it available to students by creating an External Tool link in one or more modules in your course.
- Click the + icon on the right side of the module heading.
- Choose External tool from the dropdown menu.
- Choose Carmen AI Assistant from the list of available tools.
- Select the assistant you want to use. Click Add.
- Click Add Item.
- Publish the module item you have created.
If you want the assistant to appear in more than one module, repeat the steps described above. Even if you are linking to the same assistant in multiple modules, each link is unique.
Future iterations will enable the AI Assistant to be added to the Carmen navigation bar and may allow the assistant to be embedded within a page or assignment description.
