The university has chosen Simple Syllabus to assist with The Ohio State University’s compliance efforts for the syllabus provisions of Senate Bill 1. Simple Syllabus (by Simple Higher Ed) is a syllabus tool.
Simple Syllabus is a centralized, template-driven platform built by Simple Higher Ed that enables instructors to quickly personalize and publish interactive class syllabi.
To learn more about why Ohio State has adopted Simple Syllabus, see articles posted on the Faculty Affairs site.
Key Points:
First time using it: Simple Syllabus provides a template for instructors to complete. Copying and pasting content from a Word document or Carmen page is a great way to set up the majority of your first Simple Syllabus.
Copy to multiple sections and future semesters: Once your first Simple Syllabus is created, you can easily copy it to the same course if you are teaching multiple sections of the same course, or copy it ahead to the next semester when the next semester is available.
Use CarmenCanvas or use Simple Syllabus’ online platform: Filling out (and editing) your Simple Syllabus can all be done within CarmenCanvas, or from the Simple Syllabus online platform if you prefer, such as for instructors who choose to not use CarmenCanvas for their courses.
Department or college-level expectations: Consult with your department or college leadership about any specific expectations for using Simple Syllabus.
Consistent student experience: While only the components required by SB1 must be completed by start of the semester, instructors are encouraged to use the whole template for a consistent student experience across courses. If you decide to complete more than the SB1-required components, consider moving the Simple Syllabus link from the bottom of the course navigation menu to a prominent position toward the top of the menu.
Documentation for the Simple Syllabus service is in progress and will be available soon.
