Simple Syllabus is a centralized, template-driven platform built by Simple Higher Ed that enables you to quickly personalize and publish interactive class syllabi. The tool, which integrates with CarmenCanvas, can reduce instructional workload, streamline syllabus preparation, and enhance the accessibility of your syllabi.
The university has chosen Simple Syllabus to assist with compliance efforts for the syllabus provisions of Senate Bill 1. To learn more about why Ohio State has adopted Simple Syllabus, visit the Faculty Affairs website.
Key Points
Keep in mind the following as you build and manage your syllabi.
- Using the tool for the first time: Simple Syllabus provides a template for instructors to complete. Copying and pasting content from a Word document or Carmen page is a great way to set up the majority of your first Simple Syllabus.
- Copying to multiple sections and future semesters: Once your first Simple Syllabus is created, you can easily copy it if you are teaching multiple sections of the same course, or copy it for a future course when the next semester is available.
- Knowing department and college-level expectations: Consult with your department or college leadership about any specific expectations for using Simple Syllabus.
- Creating a consistent student experience: While only the components required by SB1 must be completed by start of the semester, instructors are encouraged to use the whole template for a consistent student experience across courses. If you decide to complete more than the SB1-required components, consider moving the Simple Syllabus link from the bottom of the course navigation menu to a prominent position toward the top of the menu.
- Editing and managing your Simple Syllabus: Depending on your preference and course context, you can edit and manage your syllabus in your CarmenCanvas course or at the Simple Syllabus online platform linked below.
More documentation for Simple Syllabus is in progress and will be available soon.
