Students who drop a course appear in the People list in CarmenCanvas as Inactive.

Instructors can tell which students are inactive when viewing the People page, Discussions, and the Gradebook. Currently enrolled students do not see inactive students in People or Discussions.
An inactive student cannot access course content, but their enrollment remains in the course. This is done so instructors can review and report on the grades and activity level of students who have dropped a course.
Inactive Students in the Gradebook
You can toggle between viewing or hiding inactive students in the Gradebook.
- In the gradebook, hover over the Student Name column to activate the vertical dot menu.
- Choose the option to show Inactive enrollments
With inactive students visible, you can view or edit an inactive student’s assigned grades and use the fly-out menu to see the assignment submission in Speedgrader.
Inactive students do not receive notifications about any changes made to their grade. Grade data for inactive students is not pushed to the Faculty Center when transferring final grades.
Enrollment Questions
If students have changed sections in a multi-section course, you may see an inactive flag by the section that was dropped but you will not see the more visible inactive flag next to the student’s name indicating they dropped the course.
If you manually enrolled a student ahead of enrollment changes coming from the Registrar's system, there may be ambiguity in which sections they are active in. If you are concerned about the access given to a student, please call the Service Desk (614-688-4357) during regular business hours and choose the menu option for the Carmen Support team.
