Set Document Language

Issue

This is how Ally describes this issue:

  • The document does not have a language set.
  • The document does not have the correct language set.

When digital materials lack a specified language setting, screen readers default to their system's voice and often pronounce terms with mismatched accents or mangle the text entirely. Setting the correct language across your documents, slides, and web content helps screen readers use the natural pronunciation while making built-in spellcheckers much more accurate for everyone. Check out how a quick update in your original files or CarmenCanvas editor can make your course materials more accessible for all your students!

Quick Fix

Set the correct language in the source document.

To apply the quick fix:

  1. Locate the issue named “The document does not have a language set” or “The document does not have the correct language set.”
  2. Select the Ally Accessibility Indicator icon next to the file.
  3. A preview of the document will appear on the left side of your screen, and the Instructor Feedback panel will be on your right. For detailed instructions, select How to set a language.
  4. Open the document by using the download icon at the top of the page.
  5. Set the language used in the document (for example, English).
    1. Entire document: To set the language for the entire document, in Microsoft Word, select all text, go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language, and choose the correct language. In most cases at Ohio State, this should be English (United States).
    2. Specific section of the document: If only part of the document uses another language, select that text and assign the appropriate language separately.
  6. Save the document.
  7. Upload the revised document to the Instructor Feedback panel to replace the original file.
  8. Close the issue and move to the next item in your list.
