Issue
This is how Ally describes this issue:
- The HTML content contains links without discernible text.
When adding links to course pages, it’s important to make them descriptive and meaningful to students who use screen readers. Avoid using short link text like “click here” or “learn more,” because these don’t provide enough context for the screen reader user to make a decision to follow the link. Instead, use more descriptive link text like “learn more about the themes discussed in module one” to be more specific. Using meaningful link text in your course hyperlinks supports WCAG accessibility requirements and helps your students who use assistive technologies successfully navigate your course material.
Quick Fix
Add descriptive text to links in CarmenCanvas.
To apply the quick fix:
- Locate the issue named “The HTML content contains links without discernible text.”
- Select the issue to view a list of pages containing links without discernible text.
- Select the Ally Accessibility Indicator icon on the first issue to open the Instructor Feedback panel.
- The link will appear on the left side of the screen, and Instructor Feedback will be on the right.
- Review the links to see if any use only icons, symbols, or images without alt text. Those types of hyperlinks count as “links without discernible text” as found by the Ally Accessibility Checker. Links without discernible text are also known as “empty links.”
- You may remove the link or add descriptive link text. Select the corresponding option in the Instructor Feedback panel and select Apply.
- Close the issue and move to the next item in your list.
