For students with disabilities, under 18 years of age without an Online Course Recording Waiver on file, or other situations where a student needs to take an exam without AI proctoring, Honorlock can be bypassed. If an exam is bypassed, Honorlock is disabled for that student’s attempt, and the attempt will not be proctored or monitored through Honorlock. You should only allow a student to bypass Honorlock if appropriate proctoring alternatives are in place.
As an instructor, there are two ways to allow a student to bypass Honorlock and still take a CarmenCanvas quiz or exam.
- Enter the Access Code that can be found on the quiz details page in CarmenCanvas. For this option, students do not need to have the Honorlock extension enabled on their browser. This is a great option if the student will not be required to use Honorlock for any exams in your course.
- Enter a unique Honorlock Bypass Code that you received through Honorlock chat. For this option, students will need to have the Honorlock extension enabled on their browser. This is a good option if a student is allowed to bypass Honorlock for a specific exam but is required to use Honorlock for other exams in your course.
For a student to take an Honorlock-enabled exam without Honorlock, someone with an Access Code or Bypass Code must manually enter the code for the student as they begin their exam session. These codes can be shared with Student Life Disability services, the Testing Center, or other approved proctors. But you should never share these codes with a student as they can be used by anyone in the course to bypass Honorlock.
Using the Access Code
If a student is authorized to take an exam outside of Honorlock, you can allow this by entering the quiz Access Code. The Access Code is the code that is available on the quiz details page in CarmenCanvas.
When you enable Honorlock on a quiz, Honorlock automatically creates an Access Code for the quiz that starts with “HL_NO_EDIT_” followed by unique numbers and letters. This Access Code should not be removed or modified in any way as doing so will break the connection the exam has with Honorlock.
To use the Access Code:
- Go to the quiz details page for the quiz.
- Copy the Access Code and provide it to SLDS, Testing Center staff or another proctor.
Students can use any browser to take the quiz, including Chrome as long as it does not have the Honorlock extension enabled.
- When the student clicks Take quiz, the exam will recognize that the Honorlock extension is not installed which will trigger the quiz to ask for an Access Code.
- You or the proctor should enter the Access Code for the student. If you are proctoring through Zoom or Teams, request remote control access to the student’s computer, and then type in the code. Never share the code with students through chat, email or even verbally.
- The exam will automatically begin outside of Honorlock.
Using the Bypass Code
If a student is authorized to take an exam outside of Honorlock, you can allow this through the use of the Honorlock Bypass Code. This option requires that students use Chrome and that the Honorlock extension is installed. You will first need to get the Bypass Code before it can be entered.
Getting the Bypass Code
To get the Bypass Code, someone with the instructor or TA role within your Carmen course will need to do the following:
- Go to the Honorlock tab within the course.
Click on the chat icon on the bottom right of the page.
- Click Chat Now to chat with an Honorlock support agent.
- Verify your name is correct and under School, type Ohio State University.
Click the Start the chat button.

- When connected with the live agent, state your role in the course, name the specific quiz, and explain that you need a Bypass Code.
- Note that Honorlock may not ask you to provide verification of your role. Instructors and TAs who access the Chat through the Carmen course go in through Honorlock’s instructor support portal and are authorized through course permissions to obtain a Bypass Code for the quiz. If you access the Honorlock chat outside of the course, you will be asked to provide verification for your identity and role.
- Honorlock support will give you a Bypass Code specific to the quiz or exam. This Bypass Code can be used for any student in the course who is approved to bypass Honorlock to take the exam. Please keep the code secure and never share it directly with a student.
Entering the Bypass Code for an exam
As the instructor, you or someone authorized to administer the exam for your course will need to manually enter the Bypass Code for the student once they begin the exam. Again, never share the Bypass Code directly with the student.
- Have the student go to the exam and click Take quiz. The Honorlock data policy will appear.
Scroll to the bottom of the quiz and click the Accessibility link.
In the pop-up's text box, enter the Bypass Code for the student. If you are proctoring through Zoom or Teams, request remote control access to the student’s computer and then type in the code. Never share the code with students through chat, email or even verbally.
- Once entered, the quiz will begin automatically outside of Honorlock.
